Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the National Handloom Day celebrations at Bharat Mandapam in Pragati Maidan on August 7. This year, the 9th National Handloom Day is being celebrated on August 07. PM Modi also interacted with handloom workers during the event. The date is in line with Swadeshi Movement which was launched on 7th August 1905 and had encouraged indigenous industries and in particular handloom weavers. During the program, Prime Minister also launched the e-portal of “Indian Textiles and Crafts Repository Portal” a Repository of Textiles & Crafts that has been developed by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). While addressing the event PM Modi said, “After independence, much importance was not given to strengthen the cloth industry (Khadi), which was so strong during the last century…the situation was that it was left to die…people who wore Khadi were looked upon with inferiority complex.”
